 April 12 Program Content

Storytelling: Makin’ Groceries (Brunner Gallery) 10am, 11:45am and 1:00pm
Author Todd-Michael St. Pierre and Illustrator Lee Brandt Randall will be on site for a book signing! The official book launching of a children’s book by Todd-Michael St. Pierre, will be featured at Second Saturdays as Ashleigh Dowden, with Playmakers of Baton Rouge, will do three readings of the story.  During the readings, Lee Brandt Randall’s illustrations from the book will project behind her.  Sure to stir up appetites, the story tells of a boy named Nicky who spends his summer vacation helping his Maw-Maw Lillian at her Cajun & Creole Café. Set in 1965 New Orleans, the tale follows the pair as they shop for groceries around town at places like The French Market and a River Road produce stand.

Media Matters (LSU Museum of Art, Third Floor) 10am until 2pm
Artists in the current exhibition, An Adventure in the Arts, utilized a wide variety of art media in the work they created. But not everyone who visits the exhibition knows how a screenprint is made, or what oil paints smell like, or how paper pulp feels. This event is an opportunity for artists to provide some insight and guidance as visitors experiment with a variety of art media. Supplies are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Children must be accompanied by an adult who is prepared to provide assistance.

Instrument Petting Zoo (Baton Rouge Symphony, 2nd Floor Classrooms) 10:30am until 1:30pm The Symphony Petting Zoo is our way of giving children of all ages a chance to find out what it takes to make an orchestral instrument play.  BRSO musicians will give a simple demonstration of the basics of playing their musical instrument, and then coach children through a hands-on mini-lesson.  Balancing a bow on a string, blowing across the hole of a flute, or buzzing their lips into a brass tube…they can try one or all of them, perhaps discovering a hidden talent or interest.

Jewelry Making and Art Classes (Arts Council/Community School for the Arts, 2nd Floor Classrooms)
--Lori Alexander will conduct a fun and educational art project using circles and radial symmetry.
--Visual artist Elise Toups will help participants create a beaded, wearable, piece of jewelry art!

Face Painting (Liz Lopes, Lamar Atrium, 1st Floor)
Experience the performance art of face painting!  Liz Lopes believes face art should be as exciting to watch as it is to be painted, and with that approach, she has been able to market her unique style of painting as an artistic entertainment for the event industry.
